About the game

The quick partnership game with 24 cards: five cards each, one turned up, and a round of calling trump. The jack of trump is the highest card and its twin of the same colour comes right after it. Take three of the five tricks to score, all five for more, or go alone for the big bonus. Three levels of opponents; play to 10 points or a quick 5.

Rules

Four players in two partnerships: you and the player across from you against the other two. The deck has 24 cards, 9 to Ace in each suit. Everyone gets five cards; the other four are the kitty, and its top card is turned up.

Calling trump: starting left of the dealer, each player may order the dealer to pick up the turned card, which makes its suit trump, or pass. The dealer then takes the card and discards one. If all four pass, the card is turned down and each player in turn may name any other suit as trump, or pass. If all pass again, the hand is thrown in and the next player deals.

Going alone: whoever makes trump may play alone; the partner puts their cards down and sits the hand out.

Trumps from the top: the jack of trump (the right bower), the jack of the other suit of the same colour (the left bower, which counts as a trump), then Ace, King, Queen, 10 and 9 of trump. In the other suits the order is Ace, King, Queen, Jack, 10, 9.

The player left of the dealer leads. Everyone must follow suit if they can (the left bower follows trump); otherwise any card may be played. The highest trump wins the trick, or else the highest card of the led suit; the winner leads next.

Scoring: the side that made trump scores 1 point for three or four tricks and 2 for all five, or 4 for all five when playing alone. If it takes fewer than three tricks it is euchred, and the other side scores 2. The first side to the target (10, or 5 for a short game) wins.

How to play

  1. Order up the turned card to make its suit trump, or pass; in the second round name any other suit.
  2. Tap a card to play it; follow the suit that was led if you can.
  3. The jack of trump is highest, then the other jack of the same colour, then Ace, King, Queen, 10, 9 of trump.
  4. Take three of five tricks with your partner to score. First to the target wins.
