Gin Rummy

Build sets and runs, knock low, or go gin.

About the game

The two-player rummy classic against a computer opponent. Draw and discard to turn your ten cards into sets and runs, keep the loose deadwood low, and knock when it is ten or less, or wait for gin. Your hand sorts itself into melds and shows the deadwood; drag cards to arrange it your way. Watch out for the undercut.

Rules

Two players, a standard deck of 52 cards. Each gets ten cards; the next card starts the discard pile, the rest is the stock. You play first in the first hand, after that the start alternates.

On your turn, draw one card, either the top of the stock or the top of the discard pile, then discard one card face up. A card you just took from the discard pile may not go straight back.

Melds are sets of three or four cards of the same rank, and runs of three or more cards in sequence in one suit (the Ace is low: A-2-3, never Q-K-A). Every card outside a meld is deadwood: Ace 1, 2 to 10 their face value, jack, queen and king 10 each. Your hand shows its best melds and its deadwood count all the time.

If your deadwood after discarding is 10 or less, you may knock: press Knock and discard your last card face down. Both hands are laid open. The other player may lay off deadwood onto the knocker's melds (a fourth card on a set, the next card at either end of a run).

The knocker scores the difference between the two deadwood counts. If the other player's deadwood is as low or lower, that is an undercut: they score the difference plus 25. Going gin, with no deadwood at all, scores 25 plus the other player's whole deadwood, and nothing may be laid off on a gin hand.

If the stock is down to two cards and nobody has knocked, the hand is void and scores nothing. Hands continue until someone reaches the target score (100 by default) and wins the game.

How to play

  1. Tap the stock, or the open card, to draw.
  2. Tap a card in your hand to discard it.
  3. Sets (three or four of a rank) and runs (three in a row of one suit) are melds; the rest is deadwood.
  4. Deadwood 10 or less? Knock. None at all? Gin!
