About the game

The classic trick-taking game for four. Pass three cards, follow suit and stay away from the hearts and the queen of spades, because every one of them costs points. Or go for all 26 and shoot the moon. Three computer players sit at the table, in three levels of strength; play to 100 points or a quick 50.

Rules

Four players get thirteen cards each. You play against three computer players; there are no partners.

Before each hand everyone passes three cards: to the left in the first hand, to the right in the second, across in the third, and in the fourth nobody passes. Then it starts over.

Whoever holds the 2 of clubs leads it to the first trick. Everyone must follow the suit that was led if they can; if not, they may play any card. The highest card of the led suit takes the trick (Ace is high, there are no trumps), and whoever took it leads the next.

Hearts may not be led until a heart has been played on a trick, unless you have nothing else. On the first trick nobody may play a heart or the queen of spades, unless their hand holds nothing else.

After the hand, every heart you took counts 1 point and the queen of spades 13, 26 in all. Whoever takes all 26 shoots the moon: they score 0 and every other player 26.

The game ends at the end of a hand in which someone reaches the target (100, or 50 for a short game). The lowest score wins; a tie for lowest is a shared win.

How to play

  1. Pick three cards to pass, then take the three you get.
  2. Tap a card to play it; follow the suit that was led if you can.
  3. The highest card of the led suit takes the trick. Each heart costs 1 point, the queen of spades 13.
  4. When someone reaches the target, the lowest score wins.
